Preventing Obesity in Patients through Community Health Prevention Programs

Date of Review: February, 2019

Guided by the ecological model paradigm, this problem-based learning case, from MedEdPORTAL, was developed to expose pre-clerkship medical students to core concepts of public health. This case focuses on the social and behavioral risk factors for chronic conditions such as obesity and asthma in pediatric populations, and was implemented in an underserved community in Richmond, CA. Modifications would be necessary to make this case relevant for other communities, however the authors provide a list of resources for faculty. A companion article in the Journal of Community Health presents additional information related to student outcomes (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22012409; PMID 22012409).– Katy Wright, PhD, NCEAS
