Say My Name: Understanding the Power of Names, Correct Pronunciation, and Personal Narratives

Date of Review: July, 2023

This resource addresses the impact of name mispronunciation has on the learning environment. It is a workshop that shares first via didactic lecture the implications that name mispronunciation has on our peers and how for many this can be considered a microaggresion and impact sense of self worth and comfort in their surrounding environment. The attendees are then given an opportunity to share in small groups their experiences with mispronunciation of names and are given cases to review and problem solve together. All the resources for the session including a facilitation guide are included and appears to be relatively easy to implement. Although I have not come across a curriculum specifically focused on preventing name mispronunciation, I believe that incorporating such a focus would be a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive and respectful learning environment for all students.  -Anna Marie Pacheco Young, MD, N-CEAS [Edited by Dr. Ashti Doobay-Persaud]
