An Active Learning Module Teaching Advanced Communication Skills to Care for Sexual Minority Youth in Clinical Medical Education

Date of Review: October, 2018

This resource, from MedEdPORTAL, aims to support the development of communication skills necessary to provide care for sexual and gender minority youth. The target audience for this resource is third and fourth year medical students during their required pediatrics clerkship.  The 2-hour workshop occurs after learners have completed adolescent medicine content including the HEADSS assessment to allow the session to build upon previously learned skills.  The highly interactive workshop utilizes a number of learning modalities: pre-work, role-play, exercises stemming from video and audio media, and small group work products.  The curriculum is founded on pre-specified AAMC competencies and also aligns with relevant entrustable professional activities (EPAs), facilitating relatively seamless integration of the session into other institutions’ efforts.  While the materials easily transfer to other institutions, the session will benefit from expert faculty facilitators.  Evaluation revealed high self-reported learner knowledge and attitude changes.  Finally, the session is situated within a larger 4-year curriculum to address the care of individuals who are part of sex and gender minorities (SGM); authors note that learners without prior coursework in SGM care may have difficulty starting with this session.  Brigid Dolan, MD, NCEAS and Katy Wright, PhD, NCEAS
