Tools for Addressing Microaggressions: An Interactive Workshop for Perioperative Trainees

Date of Review: January, 2025

This microaggression workshop aims to provide peri-operative trainees with strategies to address microaggressions in their clinical environment. The material provided incorporates different learning modalities including didactic, case-based scenarios, and discussion of experiential cases in small groups. The materials, which include the didactic slides, the toolkit, cases, facilitator guide and learner guide are available for download. Although it is unclear whether this workshop changed trainees’ behavior, the pre and post evaluation showed (self-reported) improvement in trainees’ ability to define microaggressions, gained tools to address them and were more likely to take action if they experienced or witnessed microaggressions. In addition, the cases provided may be edited or expanded to make them more applicable in other settings and provide a wider resource for other residency programs.   Dina Ghandour, MD, NCEAS
