The Application of Trauma-Informed Care to Health Care for Military-Connected Individuals
Date of Review: January, 2025
This resource introduces trauma-informed care for military-connected families to second-year medical students. It utilizes didactic, small group, and case-based learning into a 1 hour session during pre-clinical education. This is a feasible curriculum for other schools to incorporate as it includes a slide set, facilitator guide, and the pre/post test for students. It also includes the pre-message sent to students, which included links for the original ACEs study, a short video explaining TIC, and an information sheet on TIC and military populations. Since it is also a one-time session, it would be simple for an institution to include during any time of the pre-clinical years, ideally closer to when students start on their clerkships so they could potentially apply the skills to their patient interactions. A limitation is that a one-time session is not enough time to practice, and with an immediate posttest it’s hard to know the retention of material weeks to months later. However, the resources provided in the pre-message and didactics could be saved and reviewed by students for later review, especially prior to certain rotations where these skills may come in handy. —Bako Orionzi, MD, NCEAS
