Speak Up! Simulation Workshop: Teaching Graduate Medical Trainees to Recognize and Respond to Microaggressions in the Clinical Setting
Date of Review: October, 2025
This resource, from MedED PORTAL, teaches graduate-level health professions learners to “speak up” about patient safety and team concerns through a simulation-based workshop that includes scenario enactments, debriefing, and guided reflection. Designed to fit within existing patient safety or professionalism curricula, it offers facilitator guides and adaptable case materials that make implementation feasible across training programs. Strengths include its active, experiential learning format, structured debriefing process, and strong emphasis on a high-impact clinical skill. It is also not a time-consuming workshop. While the effectiveness depends on skilled facilitation and access to simulation resources, this well-designed workshop provides a practical and portable approach to fostering communication and safety advocacy in healthcare teams.–Jane Aruma, MD, NCEAS
