Social Determinants of Health Curriculum for the Pediatric Clerkship
Date of Review: January, 2025
This resource introduces social determinants of health to third-year medical students in their pediatric clerkship. It incorporates a flipped classroom, case-based curriculum with readings, and a team-based didactic session over 4 sessions. Given the curriculum is incorporated into a required clinical clerkship, I think it would be relatively easy for other institutions to implement a version of this curriculum into their clinical training. It includes a slide set for each session as pre-work with a clinical case modules for the small group activities as well as some directed learning. The curriculum requires a 5-10 minute small group activity which makes it feasible for students to complete or to incorporate into already existing didactics. The cases in pediatrics are in line with teaching and tradition well from session to session. Additionally the SDOH discussion is far reaching and can serve as a template for other specialties to develop similar curricula. –Yaritzy Astudillo, MD, NCEAS
