Say My Name: Understanding the Power of Names, Correct Pronunciation, and Personal Narratives
Date of Review: November, 2024
This workshop on the importance of name pronunciation fits into either 60 or 75 minutes using an adaptable number of facilitators for a mixed trainee and faculty group. Their material introduces name mispronunciation as a microaggression and provides tools to improve name pronunciation in the workplace. The main role of the facilitators is to lead small group discussions. This workshop was initially virtual but can be modified to in person. It would be easy to implement at an institutional event or within a small group (e.g. a residency). Although it does not directly impact patient care, it leverages the team based nature of healthcare and importance of inclusivity on said teams. –Emily Olson, MD, NCEAS
