Foundations of LGBTQIA+ Health

Date of Review: January, 2022

This brief online module, which can be completed in as little as 30 minutes, presents key concepts and terms, health disparities in LGBTQIA+ populations, and how to provide high-quality care to LGBTQIA+ patients. The informational Part 1 module is primarily composed of informational slides, and includes interactive materials–such as brief questions about material from prior slides–to engage learners as they proceed through the material. After the Part 1 module, learners are offered 3 brief courses about foundations of LGBTQIA+ health (for clinicians, non-clinical staff, and administrators). Each course provides practical advice on communication strategies and relevant clinical needs in LGBTQIA+ groups. This module has some notable strengths, including its provision of up-to-date information (as of 2022), its ease of access/completion, and practical advice for many health care audiences. I would recommend it to students, experienced clinicians, and others in health care who need introductory information and/or training about the provision of health care to LGBTQIA+ populations. It is not well-suited to individuals looking to become experts in this area. –Dave Liss, PhD, NCEAS
