Foundations of LGBTQIA+ Health, Part 2: For Clinicians
Date of Review: July, 2023
This self-guided resource very briefly provides foundations for communication, data collection, and health disparities in regards to the LGBTQIA+ community, and includes a list of resources at the end for learners to continue their education. This may be applied to any profession/specialty at any level. It may be completed within 30min and includes a brief interactive slide set and a video with both one bad and two excellent examples of how to ask a patient about sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). Other content includes culturally affirming communication, clinical scenarios, how to apologize if you’ve misspoken, and screening for MSM for discussions on PrEP and Hep A/B vaccination. It also introduces sexual health services for MSM and gender-affirming care for transgender/gender diverse people, including hormones, surgery, and appropriate preventive care (based on anatomy and hormone use). This is a feasible curriculum for anyone to complete at any time, and opens the door for further education and conversation around LGBTQIA+ care. Of note, you do have to go in and create an account but it is free of charge -Cassandra Smith, DO, NCEAS [Edited by Dr. Ashti Doobay-Persaud]
