Abusive Bruising and Cutaneous Mimics Module in the Child Abuse Pediatrics Curriculum for Physicians (CAP-CuP)

Date of Review: April, 2026

This resource is an interactive module on abusive bruising and its cutaneous mimics, designed for medical students, residents, and practicing clinicians. It can be delivered as a large-group presentation or completed independently as a self-paced module, with a total runtime of 45-60 minutes. The module has three core objectives: 1. Apply the TEN-4-FACES-P rule to identify high-risk bruising 2. Answer questions about bruise timing using evidence-based principles 3. Distinguish abusive bruising from common cutaneous mimics Effectiveness is assessed using pre- and post-module evaluations. The module was used during the pediatric rotation or requested by providers with a specific interest in child abuse recognition. Its structure and content make it straightforward to incorporate into other institutions’ pediatric curricula. Included materials: PowerPoint slides, presenter script, pre/post assessments, and a clinical reference tool (PDF). Strengths • Presents a complex and sensitive topic in a clear, structured way • Uses high-quality images across a range of skin tones, including culturally relevant mimics • Integrates interactive questions, case-based discussion, and didactic content without feeling disjointed — Jessica Colin Escobar, MD MBA, NCEAS
