A Systematic and Practical Framework on Gender and Sexual Diverse (GSD) Health for Internal Medicine Residents
Date of Review: March, 2026
This curriculum is an evidence-based framework providing internal medicine residents with a systematic, stepwise approach to addressing gender and sexual diverse patients’ health needs. It consists of two 2-hour sessions utilizing a case-based, small-group, interactive scenario of a transgender woman requiring screening and treatment of sexually transmitted illnesses, pre-exposure prophylaxis prescription, and gender-affirming hormone therapy initiation. This could easily be presented to medical providers at any level (medical student, resident, fellow, attending) and of any specialty. –Cassandra Smith, DO, NCEAS
