What Happened and Why: Responding to Racism, Discrimination, and Microaggressions in the Clinical Learning Environment

This curriculum published by MedEd Portal is focused on allowing medical students to gain skills in addressing acts of racism or discrimination during their clerkship rotations. The entire curriculum and development of the workshop was very well designed, and the authors describe their methodology in detail. This course includes a 110-minute review session that focuses on enabling students to apply communication strategies to address minor defamation issues. Facilitators provide a detailed introduction to each response strategy, complete with specific examples and scenarios in which each strategy can be applied, there are four case studies in total, and in the first one, students will engage in role-playing. In addition to these communication strategies, students will learn how to solve minor defamation problems along a continuum. The teaching resources are excellent and all needed materials are included to plan such a session including timeline leading up to the session.
