The National Collaborative for Education to Address the Social Determinants of Health (NCEAS) is a HRSA-funded Academic Unit for Primary Care Training and Enhancement. The mission of the NCEAS is to prepare primary care clinicians with the expertise and leadership to address the social determinants of health (SDOH).
Do you have relevant SDOH resources, curricula, or evaluation tools to share? Please send them to us at contact@sdoheducation.org.
Call for Poster and Oral Abstracts
Poster and Oral Abstracts are now being accepted for the 2020 Annual Conference. We welcome submissions in the following three categories: education, research, and clinical/policy innovations. Abstracts should highlight topics relevant to social determinants of health (SDOH) or health disparities and may include preliminary results, completed studies, position papers, or descriptions of completed or ongoing innovations. The aim of the poster session is to facilitate dissemination of research and innovations to the broader community of educators and healthcare professionals addressing social determinants of health. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) training curricula, innovative strategies to address SDOH, and case studies.

De-Biasing Medical Education: A Checklist Methodology
In this webinar, Dr. Caruso Brown discusses how medical education content suffers from implicit, and sometimes explicit, bias with regard to race, ethnicity, gender and other characteristics. Further, medical education may play a role in reinforcing false beliefs about biological differences between racial and ethnic groups. Such beliefs then affect how students and trainees treat and interact with patients. However, faculty members who devise curricular content in undergraduate medical education may be unfamiliar with concepts such as social determinants of health (SDH), health disparities and structural competency, unaware of how SDH intersect with their areas of expertise, or inexperienced with discussing bias in the classroom. Inspired by the success of checklists in some efforts to improve patient safety and quality, we developed a tool, in the format of a checklist, that faculty members could use when developing or reviewing any type of content for medical students in order to identify and address bias before it reached students.
New Blog!
Lessons on Leadership
Though the focus on this blog series tends to be on social determinants of health (SDOH) curricula or related efforts in education, I’d like to deviate for a moment to focus on our own community of SDOH champions. Those of us who advocate for a SDOH approach in education, research, administration, policy and/or clinical practice are often pushing against the tide in this country. As healthcare slowly evolves away from an antiquated fee for service model, we find ourselves as a lone voice or a voice among a chorus for change. In reflecting on each of our individual efforts in the space of SDOH, it occurs to me that each of us is a leader in a movement that is greater than any one of us alone.
Resource of the Month
The Social History…It’s About the Patient – Culture and All
This resource introduces the concept of taking a social history to second-year medical students. Using the fictional case of a Spanish-speaking Salvadorean immigrant who presents with abdominal pain, the curriculum covers issues directly and peripherally related to taking a social history, including interviewing skills, the challenges of having family members serve as interpreters, and the need for knowledge of and competence with patients’ cultural backgrounds.
