Aquifer Social Determinants of Health

Date of Review: January, 2022

In order to access this resource, either an individual or institutional subscription may be required. There are 3 modules or “cases” in the social determinants section. This review will focus on the first module which is more broad, the second and third modules are case based and teach about language and poverty as determinants of health. The learning objectives are well-written and provide a comprehensive overview of the principles and definitions in health equity and health disparities. The goal of the cases is to highlight nonmedical factors that affect health outcomes and discuss how being aware of these factors can improve patient care. This course is a well referenced introductory course for learners and could easily be integrated in the preclinical years. It can stand alone as asynchronous material that is comprehensive. The case also has questions and prompts that faculty could discuss with students in small groups. This material can be easily integrated into both the preclinical and early clinical years for HPE students using the aquifer platform.–Ashti Doobay-Persaud, MD, NCEAS
