Structural Competency: A Faculty Development Workshop Series for Anti-racism in Medical Education

Date of Review: April, 2026

This resource describes a faculty development curriculum focused on teaching structural competency and anti-racism in medical education to clinical educators. It was created for faculty responsible for designing and implementing curricula, both in didactic settings and at the bedside. The curriculum consists of a series of workshops that use case-based learning, facilitated discussions, and practical teaching tools to help faculty integrate concepts such as structural racism and social determinants of health (SDOH) into their clinical practice. It was previously implemented as a four part series of a faculty development program within academic medical centers. Strengths of this resource include its focus on faculty as key agents of curricular change, use of case-based and discussion-driven methods that promote reflection and application of complex concepts, and emphasis on practical tools that can be readily integrated into existing workflows. Although results showed a significant change, the sample size was very small. A potential limitation is that its impact may depend on sustained institutional support and reinforcement over time, and faculty without prior exposure to these concepts may require additional longitudinal engagement to fully integrate structural competency into their teaching practices. –Kathleen Kelly, MD, NCEAS
