The National Collaborative for Education to Address the Social Determinants of Health (NCEAS) was originally a HRSA-funded Academic Unit for Primary Care Training and Enhancement. The mission of the NCEAS is to prepare primary care clinicians with the expertise and leadership to address the social determinants of health (SDOH).

What are We Teaching Physicians about the Social and Structural Drivers of Health? Findings from a Recent Scoping Review
A scoping review just published in Academic Medicine sought to describe the content of curricula delivered to physician trainees on the social and structural drivers of health and related concepts. While other studies have described pedagogic approaches, assessment methods and other “curricular logistics,” this is the first study we know of that has described in detail what physician trainees are actually being taught about SDOH. In this session, the study’s authors will describe the study’s key findings and facilitate a discussion about what we should be teaching physicians about SDOH, and what they can do about these drivers.

The Community Health Advocacy Initiative: A Longitudinal Experiential Curriculum in Community Engagement for Preclerkship Medical Students
The Community Health Advocacy Initiative (CHAI) is a curriculum at Feinberg that aims to give all medical students the knowledge and skills to collaborate with community partners to promote health. The CHAI curriculum was recently published in MedEdPORTAL and is featured in the AAMC’s new Community Engagement for Health Equity educational collection.

Deconstructing Ableism in Health Care Settings Through Case-Based Learning
This is a case-based learning curriculum, from MedEd Portal, implemented by a medical student team at Stanford and at the Stanford Conference on Disability in Healthcare and Medicine to educate medical students on disability and developing proper frameworks for improving the patient-physician relationship. This curriculum covered a novel topic that needs more emphasis in medical education however I viewed more as a qualitative/ exploratory assessment of attitudes and perception. I think this is a great first step for students and educators to incorporating more education on working with those with disabilities.
