“That was then, this is now”:A succinct reference to inclusive, patient-centered language
Date of Review: May, 2023
This is a succinct guide to patient-centered language, originally designed as a reference for faculty members. It could easily be used by health care providers at any level and specialty, including trainees. This helpful tool addresses commonly used terms or phrases in medicine that are not patient-centered, provides alternatives, and describes the rationale for these alternatives. The guide also includes embedded links to external references. Topics include racial and ethnic identity, gender identity, chronic health conditions, and social determinants of health. This guide is not a stand-alone curriculum. It could be used as a resource for trainees and physicians in their everyday practice, or could be incorporated as a take-away or summary of teaching points for a curriculum on patient-centered language. –Emma Anselin, MD, NCEAS
