Alcohol Use Disorder: An Interprofessional Case-Based Exercise
Date of Review: January, 2019
This module, from MedEdPORTAL, is part of an inter-professional education elective that uses cases to explore the role of different professionals in patient care. An alcohol use disorder case is used in a small group setting where the group discussed the case through guided facilitation. The facilitator guide’s cases and instructions for care are detailed and would be easy to implement. However, it does require participation or a diverse group of health professional students so that would need to be coordinated. The authors use multiple evaluation techniques including pre/post test knowledge surveys; debriefing and a simulated patient scenario where they use the WHO’s AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) screening tool. —Ashti Doobay-Persaud, MD, NCEAS
