The Culture of Gun Violence: An Active Learning Exercise

This MedEdPORTAL resource uses a case study to introduce medical students to the complex topic of gun violence, with a focus on the role of the physician. It is a single session, small-group format that allows for easy incorporation into existing SDOH curricula or rotation experiences. The powerpoint presentation for the case is provided, and can be easily tailored to reflect different communities around the country. One limitation is the relatively scarce qualitative data collected to assess the curriculum, but this again can be easily changed. Overall, the case does a nice job of concisely introducing a complicated, divisive topic through the lens of a physician. –Paul Ravenna, MD, NCEAS
