Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Adolescent Health: An Interprofessional Case Discussion
Date of Review: October, 2018
This curriculum, from MedEdPORTAL, focuses on training interdisciplinary teams (medicine, nursing, nutrition, psychology and social work) to assess and treat adolescent LGBT youth. The curriculum includes 4 modules delivered to classes of 6-10 learners, with 1 instructor. Strengths of the resource include its depth and ability to expose learners to the complexities of serving LGBT youth. The resource includes several supporting materials, including an in-depth instructor’s guide. It could feasibly be adapted to learning environments with learners from only 1 discipline, including medical students or residents. Limitations include the time required to implement the 4-module curriculum, and the apparent lack of change in learners’ confidence to take sexual health history or counsel LGBT adolescents. It may not be of interest to medical professionals who are not focused on adolescents with LGBT issues. —Dave Liss PhD, NCEAS and Mita Goel, MD, NCEAS
