Health Insurance Programs, Extended Social History Taking, and Resources to Overcome Health Care Barriers: Introduction for Medical Students

This resource, from MedEdPortal, is a classroom learning activity that was offered to medical students during their first inpatient clerkship at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. Students attend one classroom learning activity session which utilizes a multimodal approach to instruct students including, a didactic portion and discussions which encourage the learners to draw from past experiences as well as their existing knowledge and skill base. The didactic component focuses on instructing students about Medicaid, Medicare, the Affordable Care Act, and its outcomes. This portion also focuses on how to take a detailed social history and how to identify barriers to health care. The interactive component consists of two activities. First, students discuss cases where patients experienced barriers to health care and discuss potential resources to benefit patients. Second, students investigate resources and share information about the resources with other students through an online discussion board. This curriculum is appropriate for preclinical and clinical medical students as well as health care providers who may care for patients who experience barriers to accessing care. –Ashti Doobay Persaud, MD, NCEAS
