Advancing Global Health Education: Preparing Emergency Medicine Trainees for Low-Resource Settings Through Simulation-Based Training
Date of Review: July, 2026
This resource is designed to prepare emergency medicine trainees for global health experiences, with a focus on working in low and middle income countries. It includes five case scenarios that test residents’ ability to diagnose and manage common diseases and injuries while working with limited resources. Medical students also participated in the scenarios. I think this would be a useful resource to incorporate into the curriculum. The educational PowerPoint, all case scenarios, and post session survey are provided. **Strengths:** – Thoughtful scenarios that expose trainees to conditions and challenges less commonly encountered in high income countries and require them to be resourceful. – Scenarios introduce practical techniques and tools for working in resource limited settings, allowing trainees to leave with skills they can apply in these environments. – Thorough lecture that explains the importance of pre departure training and addresses ethical considerations to help trainees feel prepared to meet the needs of the host site. – Lecture provides a useful teaching component after the scenarios and helps bring the cases together. – Jessica Colin Escobar, MD, MBA, NCEAS
