The National Collaborative for Education to Address the Social Determinants of Health (NCEAS) is a HRSA-funded Academic Unit for Primary Care Training and Enhancement. The mission of the NCEAS is to prepare primary care clinicians with the expertise and leadership to address the social determinants of health (SDOH).

Growing your own Advocates – An Experience in our Residency Program
Definition of advocacy: the act or process of supporting a cause or proposal : the act or process of advocating (see ADVOCATE ENTRY 2) something1
Among the updated ACGME milestones in Family Medicine2 is a new sub-competency “Advocacy”. The target for graduation is set such that our graduates know how to use tools to affect policy change. As one of the faculty who has undertaken teaching in this milestone I applaud this vision even as I struggle with how to implement a curriculum around this vital skill set.

Working With People With Disabilities: An Interactive Video/Lecture Session for First- and Second-Year Medical Students
This curriculum is for an interactive introductory session for first- and second-year medical students on how to approach individuals with observable disability in clinical settings. The curriculum aims to improve medical students’ comfort level in approaching and delivering care to patients with disabilities, and focuses on barriers among individuals with disability, possible causes of provider discomfort in caring for individuals with disability, and methods for effectively approaching individuals with disability in a clinical encounter
