The National Collaborative for Education to Address the Social Determinants of Health (NCEAS) is a HRSA-funded Academic Unit for Primary Care Training and Enhancement. The mission of the NCEAS is to prepare primary care clinicians with the expertise and leadership to address the social determinants of health (SDOH).

The NCEAS is proud to host the 1st annual conference on education to address the social determinants of health on May 7, 2019 in Chicago, Illinois. Our robust agenda will bring together educators, researchers and community organizations to discuss innovations in addressing social determinants of health and strategies to prepare the next generation of health care providers to address these issues.

Expert Consensus on Teaching Social Determinants of Health
Dr. Karen Sheehan, a Professor of Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University, recalls her experience learning about social determinants of health as a medical student and how those lessons influence her work today.
“The concept that social factors impact health can be found in the epidemiologist Rudolf Virchow’s writings from the 19th century, but I didn’t know any of this when I was a medical student studying in Chicago during the 1980’s.
During this time, massive, public housing projects such as Robert Taylor Homes, Stateway Gardens, and Cabrini-Green Homes warehoused thousands of poor, mostly minority, Chicagoans and were infamous for their high rates of community violence. Cabrini-Green Homes was located less than a mile away from Northwestern University Medical School, but it may as well have been in a different city. Access in and out was limited by dead end streets and limited public transportation which even included no service on some routes on Sundays. No grocery stores were located in the 70-acre housing development nor was there easy access to laundry facilities, safe playgrounds, or high-quality schools.”
Using TED Talks to Teach Social Determinants of Health
This resource provides workshop materials for family medicine trainees or practicing physicians to engage them in reflection and action relating to the impact of SDH on patients in their practice. Using PREZI software, the 8-topic focused workshops follow a 6-stage framework: a definition of the topic, a TedTalk relevant to the topic with reflection questions, discussion of global impact, discussion of local impact, role of primary care in addressing the issue, and follow-up activity and discussion.
