It’s About Trust: Low-Income Parents’ Perspectives on How Pediatricians Can Screen for Social Determinants of Health

Date of Review: June, 2020

This report presents survey and focus group data to answer the following research questions: 1) What are low-income parent’ perspectives on social determinants of health? 2) How receptive are parents to discussing social needs with pediatricians? 3) What are their ideas for making social determinants of health screenings successful? Educators may use this report to facilitate a discussion of best practices for screening for social needs in the pediatric setting. One consideration is that focus groups were conducted in New York City and findings may not generalize to other municipalities/regions, however the authors provide the reader with detailed information regarding their methodology and research setting. —Katy Wright, PhD, NCEAS
