Few health professions programs have had the chance to systematically map where and how SDOH content actually shows up across their curriculum. It’s a gap that’s even harder to close if the program is on an accelerated timeline. This session offers a candid, in-progress look at how a team within one PA program is trying to close that gap. The presenter will walk through the team’s use of the NASEM 5 A’s Framework (Awareness, Adjustment, Assistance, Alignment, Advocate) — a tool built for clinical social care delivery, not curriculum mapping — and be candid about the leap of repurposing it as an educational lens, including where it does and doesn’t quite fit. Attendees will hear the real story behind standing up the effort, the judgment calls involved in coding syllabi and course content against the framework, and early, hedged signal from the data pulled so far. This is a genuine look at process and method which comes with an invitation to join our interprofessional community of practice (CoP) and push each other’s work forward.

Andrea McKinnond, MMS, PA-C, is an Air Force veteran and Assistant Professor of PA Studies serving as Director of Clinical Education at Wake Forest School of Medicine, where she also maintains an active clinical practice in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. A 2015 graduate of the Wake Forest PA program, she is known for a learner-centered, outcomes-driven approach to clinical education and has earned honors including the Atrium Health Hero Award for Belonging (2022) and a Clinical Year Teaching Excellence Award (2025). A past president of the NC Academy of PAs, she remains an active advocate for the PA profession and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Sobia Shariff Hussaini, MHAS
Sobia Sharrif Hussaini is an Assistant Professor and Director of Admissions & Strategic Recruitment in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. She leads admissions and recruitment efforts for the PA and Doctor of Medical Science programs, teaches healthcare leadership and systems-based practice, and directs the Emerging Leaders dual-degree programs in partnership with the Wake Forest School of Business and School of Law. Her scholarship focuses on health equity, admissions and student success in health professions education, and leadership development. With prior experience in healthcare administration and operational improvement, she is committed to advancing healthcare education, developing future leaders, and promoting equitable access to health professions training.
