Social Determinants of Health Curriculum Integrated Into a Core Emergency Medicine Clerkship

This 4-week curriculum, from MedEdPORTAL, introduces social determinants of health to fourth year medical students during the emergency medicine clerkship. Delivered in 3 parts, learners first identify and interview a patient with unaddressed social issues, complete reflection and discussion exercises, and present their case as part of an oral team presentation. Materials include a student guide, post-curriculum evaluation survey, reflection questions and rubric, and team presentation sample. The authors note the curriculum is generalizable for use by other health profession learners, including nurses and nursing students, physical/occupational therapists, physician assistants, social work students, and residents in multiple specialties. It would be beneficial to have a faculty facilitators with experience in community outreach, though not required. — Katy Wright, PhD, NCEAS
