Physical Activity for Children (Nutrition in Medicine)

This online interactive ‘Physical Activity for Children’ module from the ‘Nutrition in Medicine’ curriculum, geared to teaching medical students, introduces theories of the stages of change for counseling in context of physical activity and current guidelines about assessment and treatment recommendations. The section on identifying barriers and ways to address them is detailed. All of the didactic slides introducing content are followed by an interactive case or slide applying these concepts. There is a focus on implementing the FITT framework for counseling patients in the clinical setting. There are interactive cases applying the different counseling skills and treatment recommendations appropriate for each patient. The final slide is a 5 – part patient vignette with detailed questions, answers and responses for each. There is a quiz with 2 MCQs with detailed responses to select from, answer explanations, and results that can be saved, printed and reviewed by the learner. There are printable ‘pocket notes’ at the end summarizing the main takeaways. This online module takes about 30 minutes to complete, is very interactive and consequently easy to complete. This material could be easily integrated as preparatory coursework for practicing primary care prevention counseling techniques or supplementing curricula in lifestyle medicine or a nutrition curriculum for students early in their pre-clinical years.
